Do These Right Now

These are the most critical steps. Do them in order, as fast as possible. The first 30 minutes are the most important.

1

Call 1930 — National Cybercrime Helpline (Do This First)

If money was transferred fraudulently, call 1930 immediately. This is India's dedicated financial cyber fraud helpline. They can contact your bank and attempt to freeze the transaction before the money moves further. Time is critical — the longer you wait, the harder recovery becomes.

2

Block & Freeze Your Affected Accounts

Immediately call your bank's 24/7 helpline to freeze transactions. Most banks allow you to freeze your account via their app or by calling the back of your debit card number. Also block the UPI ID/phone number that received the payment on PhonePe, GPay, or Paytm.

3

Take Screenshots of Everything

Screenshot all messages, calls, emails, transaction IDs, payment receipts, website URLs, and social media profiles involved. These are your evidence. Save them to a safe location (email them to yourself). Do NOT delete any messages even if the scammer asks you to.

4

File a Complaint on cybercrime.gov.in

Visit cybercrime.gov.in, create a free account, and file a cyber complaint. Select the appropriate category (financial fraud, social media fraud, etc.), upload your screenshots, and note the complaint number. This creates an official record and may trigger police investigation.

5

Change Passwords on All Compromised Accounts

If any login credentials were shared or if you suspect your accounts were accessed, change passwords immediately. Enable 2FA. If your email was compromised, treat ALL accounts that use that email as compromised and change those passwords too.

6

File a Police FIR (For Large Amounts)

For financial fraud above ₹1,000, visit your nearest police station and file a cyber crime FIR. Bring all screenshots and transaction details. You can also file online through your state's police portal. Having an FIR strengthens your case for any bank dispute resolution.

7

Talk to Someone — Don't Suffer Silently

Scams can cause significant emotional distress, shame, and anxiety. Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or counsellor. Remember: being scammed is not your fault — these are sophisticated, professional criminals who target thousands of people. Many have been there before you.

Common Questions After Getting Scammed

Answers to the questions most students ask after falling victim to an online scam.

Can I get my money back after a UPI scam?
Possibly, but speed is critical. If you call 1930 within the first few hours, they can flag the receiving account and sometimes freeze the funds before they are withdrawn. File at cybercrime.gov.in and also raise a dispute with your bank. Success rates are higher for larger amounts and faster reporting.
Will the police actually do anything if I file a complaint?
Yes, especially for larger amounts. India's cybercrime units have become significantly more active in recent years. Filing a complaint also creates an official record, which helps with bank dispute resolution even if no direct action is taken on the complaint.
I'm embarrassed. Do I have to tell anyone?
You don't have to tell anyone except the relevant authorities. Cyber scams happen to engineers, doctors, professors, and people from all backgrounds — scammers are professionals running sophisticated operations. However, telling trusted friends or family can help you process the experience and may also warn them.
The scammer has my Aadhaar details. What do I do?
Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in immediately and lock your biometrics. Also check for any new mobile numbers linked to your Aadhaar using the TRAI DND / TAFCOP portal. Alert your bank that your Aadhaar may have been compromised so they can add additional verification for large transactions.
A scammer is threatening to share private photos/videos of me. What do I do?
Do NOT pay — this always leads to more demands. Report immediately at cybercrime.gov.in using the Women & Children complaint category, which handles cases with discretion. Call 1930 and also reach out to iCall (9152987821) for free counselling. Many of these threats are empty, and paying only confirms you are willing to pay more.
What happens after I file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in?
You receive an acknowledgement with a complaint number. The complaint is reviewed and forwarded to the relevant police jurisdiction. You may be contacted by the police to provide additional details. Keep your complaint number safe and follow up if you don't hear within 2 weeks.
